Kenton C. Burr recently founded Kenton's Cheese Co. Kenton is a 6th generation member of Burr Ayr Farms, Ltd, a farm located 3.5 miles west of Trumansburg, in a small area known as Searsburg. A graduate of Cornell University's 1997 class in Animal Science, Kenton belongs to a new generation of highly educated farmers committed to local markets, including the historical and land preservation of the region.
This medium-size farm has evolved from apple, pear and plum orchards, to pigs, sheep and chickens, to Ayrshire and Holstein purebred cattle. The cattle have received multiple awards from state to national level competitions.
And, the family is engaged in the community. Kenton's grandfather and father have served on Hector's town and the Trumansburg fair boards for over 40 years.
The farm has been recognized as a century farm and is also proud of its environmental standards. In 2009, we were one of the first dairy farms in the area to receive an environmental stewardship award. With new challenges to preserve agricultural landscapes, we are now moving to this new phase of producing cheeses. Consistent with our past excellence, our goal is to become the best soft cheese producer in the local area.
